The teacher’s Training Day of the ADMIRA (in Catalan, Activitats amb detectors Medipix per investigar la radiació a l’aula) project will take place on Thursday, April 21, it being the first edition of the 21/22 school year. This project revolves around particle detection and its main objective is to bring research closer to high school students to foster new STEM careers.

With these training sessions, we can motivate teachers by offering them the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on particle detection and radioactivity, which will in turn allow them to work on these topics in class using the Timepix devices.

PROGRAMME

CONFERENCES

Where? Eduard Fontserè Room, UB Physics Faculty and via Zoom

Aimed in-person at teachers of the High Schools of Catalonia

Aimed via zoom at teachers and students of the High Schools of Catalonia

Registration to attend in person and virtually

CONFERENCE: «COSMIC RAYS»

Cosmic rays (CRs) are one of the most important component in our Galaxy and the whole Universe. High energy CRs can interact with the ambient gas and produce gamma rays, which dominate the diffuse gamma-ray background; low energy CRs may play a leading role in the ionization in dense cores of molecular clouds, where stars are born. In this talk I will review the current understanding of the CRs, providing with an historical perspective, the techniques used for their direct and indirect measurement of CR spectra, as well as the sources thought to be responsible for their production.

By Pol Bordas (ICCUB)

When? Thursday, April 21 at 4 PM

CONFERENCE: «BACKGROUND RADIATION, PARTICLE TYPES AND DOSIMETRY »

In this talk, we will introduce the basic concepts of radioactivity, the different types of radiation particles that one can observe and we will talk about dosimetry, the branch of science in charge of measuring the doses of radiation absorbed by a material.

By Eugeni Graugés (ICCUB)

When? Thursday, April 21 at 4:45 PM

CONFERENCE: «INTRODUCTION TO THE MEDIPIX CHIPS DEVELOPED AT CERN»

In this talk, we will present the Medipix and Timepix chips, developed by the Medipix collaborations based at CERN. We will introduce their technology and show some of their applications. We will also show the different activities carried out at high schools using the Medipix detectors to present quantum and nuclear physics experimentally in class.

By Rafael Ballabriga (CERN)

When? Thursday, April 21 at 5:30 PM

WORKSHOP: «BUILDING A FOG CHAMBER»

During this activity, we will build a fog chamber that will allow us to observe traces of radiation particles such as electrons, alpha particles and muons coming from cosmic rays, by using isopropanol and dry ice.

By Daniel Parcerisas (Col·legi Sagrada Família de Gavà)

Where? Optics laboratory (A31L), UB Physics Faculty

When? Thursday, April 21 at 6 PM

Restricted to the members of the ADMIRA 21/22 work group
