We are pleased to invite you to the opening day of the ADMIRA project (Activitats amb Detectors Medipix per Investigar la Radiació a l'Aula) for the 2023-2024 academic year next Friday, September 15, at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Barcelona.

 

On this day you will be able to enjoy talks by international experts in radiation detectors, their application in classrooms and their use as an educational resource, as well as conferences by teachers and students who have used the detector and will share their experiences within the ADMIRA project.

Invited lectures:
 

  • Rafael Ballabriga (CERN) - “Applications and Innovations of Hybrid Pixel Detectors: From Particle Physics to Space and Education

    In this presentation, we will explore the hybrid pixel detectors developed at CERN. We will begin by analyzing the use of these detectors in particle physics, highlighting their importance in the study of the properties of subatomic particles. We will delve into the sensor, analysing the interconnects and the readout electronics which are developed using standard microelectronics processes.
    We will then examine several applications of pixel detectors in other fields. In the field of radiography, we will see how these detectors offer superior resolution and a significant improvement in the quality of diagnostic images. We will also explore its use in mass spectrometry, highlighting its ability to analyze complex samples with great precision.
    Another important aspect will be dosimetry in space, where pixel detectors play a key role in characterizing radiation exposure in space environments. Finally, we will discuss how these detectors have great educational potential as they allow students to perform hands-on experiments and learn about particle physics and radiation.
    In summary, this presentation will cover the most relevant aspects of the hybrid pixel detectors developed at CERN, highlighting their applications in particle physics, radiography, mass spectrometry, dosimetry in space and education.

 

  • Carlos Granja (ADVACAM, Praga) - "Advanced techniques of radiation detection and particle tracking in space with CERN Timepix detectors on board satellites and on the International Space Station"

    Overview of high-resolution measurements of space radiation in space with the Timepix ASIC chips from CERN operated in miniaturized radiation cameras from Advacam on board satellites and Cubesats and on board the International Space Station. Review of innovative techniques of radiation detection, particle tracking, quantum-imaging dosimetry and spectral- and composition-characterization of mixed-radiation fields in space/in LEO orbit and in particle radiotherapy environments. Examples of novel scientific experiments and applied research in space and further applications (nuclear physics, environment, cosmic rays, education).
     
  • Daniel Parcerisas (Escola Sagrada Família, Gavà) - “Observing the invisible. Effectiveness of MiniPIX detectors to correct students' conceptual errors about radioactivity and radiation

    When we explain a topic in the classroom, the students are not a blank page. Concept errors (or prior beliefs, alternative frameworks, intuitive knowledge,...) are all those prior knowledge that students have acquired from various sources. This talk explains what these errors are in the subject of radioactivity and radiation, what are their causes and how they condition learning.
    Finally, the methodology and results of the research carried out at the Sagrada Família school in Gavà are presented on how MiniPIX detectors in the classroom can help students correct these errors.
