ICCUB predoctoral researcher and science communicator, Toni Bertólez (@delbuitaltot) gave the talk "How to see what is invisible to us? Detecting dark matter" to the Physics fans group Sopa de Partículas last Wednesday November 2, 2022.

TALK "HOW TO SEE WHAT IS INVISIBLE TO US? DETECTING DARK MATTER"

We've known for over half a century that something isn't quite right out there. Over the last few centuries we have constructed laws of nature that describe known matter with unprecedented precision. However, when we try to understand the distribution and shape of galaxies, the motion of stars or the oldest light in the Universe; these laws fall short. If the Universe doesn't work the way we think it should, we're missing something along the way. In this talk, we will discover the best solution that science has found to solve all these unknowns: the dark matter hypothesis. A form of matter that we are unable to see and that, through gravity, has secretly directed the history of the Universe. But how do we know that dark matter is there? Why do we still not know for sure that it exists? We will try to answer this question from the perspective of cosmology and particle physics. We will discover the past, present and future of dark matter.

The Legos of matter. Beyond protons, neutrons and electrons
What is everything we know made of? Beyond atoms, protons, neutrons and electrons, matter can be many other things. The goal of particle physics is to understand what the most fundamental pieces of nature are and how they relate to each other to form the world around us.
