What are space and time? What exactly is gravity? The PhD student of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) Quim Llorens will take us in a journey to discover the mysteries of General Relativity in an outreach talk to the secondary school students of the Ramon Berenguer IV High School (Amposta).

This talk is part of the project Ambaixador@s de la Ciència of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, which aims to bring the research experiences of young researchers closer to secondary education centers in Catalonia, and to promote student participation in initiatives that stimulate their scientific and technological calling.

TALK «QUANTUM PHYSICS OF BLACK HOLES»

What are space and time? And gravity? How are these concepts linked? In this talk we will present Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and introduce you to its most illustrious protagonists: black holes. We will discuss Hawking’s paradox and explain why General Relativity doesn’t fit very well with the other great success of modern physics, quantum physics. We will see how theoretical physicists work and the multiple paths that can lead you to the world of research.

About Quim Llorens

I have been very interested in science since I was very young, and I participated in the Youth and Science program of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera and in several scientific Olympiads. Then I studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Barcelona, and I did several research stays abroad during my degree. I took a master's degree at the University of Cambridge, and now I'm home to do a PhD on quantum gravity and black holes at the UB. I also collaborate with the QuinteScience Association and the Fellows La Pedrera program.
