What are space and time? What exactly is gravity? The PhD student of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences of the University of Barcelona (ICCUB) Quim Llorens will take us in a journey to discover the mysteries of General Relativity in an outreach talk to the El Joncar Highschool seniors.
This talk is part of the Camins Infinits project, coordinated by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the Communication Area of the University of Barcelona, with the goal of providing answers to the questions that young adults and children have about the world of research.
TALK «QUANTUM PHYSICS OF BLACK HOLES»
What are space and time? And gravity? How are these concepts linked? In this talk we will present Einstein’s theory of General Relativity and introduce you to its most illustrious protagonists: black holes. We will discuss Hawking’s paradox and explain why General Relativity doesn’t fit very well with the other great success of modern physics, quantum physics. We will see how theoretical physicists work and the multiple paths that can lead you to the world of research.

About Quim Llorens
I have been very interested in science since I was very young, and I participated in the Youth and Science program of the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera and in several scientific Olympiads. Then I studied Physics and Mathematics at the University of Barcelona, and I did several research stays abroad during my degree. I took a master's degree at the University of Cambridge, and now I'm home to do a PhD on quantum gravity and black holes at the UB. I also collaborate with the QuinteScience Association and the Fellows La Pedrera program.
Camins Infinits
What makes a person decide to join the science world? What is the path of a scientist? Do people really know who and how scientists are? Do they all work in a lab? The answers are so diverse and varied as the knowledge areas.
Camins Infinits wants to provide answers to the questions that kids and young adults have about the world of research. This project wants to bring students and young researchers of the University of Barcelona closer with two goals in mind: to foster the social interest in science and knowledge and to improve the communication skills of young researchers.
