Àngels Ramos, researcher at the Cosmos Sciences Institute, ICCUB, and Professor of Atomic and Nuclear Physics at the University of Barcelona, will give the inaugural conference of the 2019-2020 course of the Societat Catalana de Física.

In the context of the exhibition "Women and Physics", created by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans in collaboration with the Faculty of Physics and the Institute of Cosmos Sciences, this talk aims to give a vision of the the situation of women in science and, more specifically, in the field of physics. Do women have the same opportunities and facilities as men to develop a scientific career? Probably not. It is well known that the number of women who choose STEM (Science, Engineering, Technologies and Mathematics) is significantly lower than that of men. It is also well known that the percentage of women in high-ranking academic positions is much lower than the percentage observed in undergraduate studies. This talk reflects on the various causes that cause this asymmetry in the STEM races, and will describe some of the current efforts of gender policies, analyzing the scope of their results.
